  The kava was good… but extremely expensive for fresh awa. If I remember correctly it was $70 for a “bowl” (1/2 gallon), which is insane. Kanaka kava in Kona is at most $25-$30 for the same size.<br><br>It was $35 for 3 of us to have a small shell (which was plastic instead of a traditional coconut shell). Not going back. I’ll just order my own powder online and make at home. This is not an affordable product. I understand and sympathize with local farmers, having to make profit, etc. but this is a bit overboard price wise.

  I started cruising kava bar just shortly after they opened and it has been such a wonderful experience. Hilo was in much need of a space such as this. All of the kava tenders couldn’t be any more personable. They’re also extremely knowledgeable about the wide range of kava they offer. They’re even have kava snow now! Definitely worth checking it out wether you just have time to cruise by for a shell, or can stay for a puzzle in the complimentary game corner.

  Best place for kava we have found yet in our three long trips to the island. Very strong brew, yummy drink options, and at a good price. The servers here are really friendly. They have tons of comfortable seating too if you need a break off your feet. We came back multiple times during our time here!

  Stopped into Kava Republic on a whim and it was the perfect way to ease into the day after a hectic morning of travel. The environment inside was soothing and the employee helping us out was very accommodating. She offered us samples of the different kava available and ultimately I went with a combination of their fresh kava and kombucha. Their other kava option was too strong for me personally, tasting almost of tree bark? It caused my mouth to numb out more than I desired. I loved getting to chat with locals who came and went throughout the hour spent there.
