Our story

Rooted in community. Built to connect it.

HappyKava connects the kava community—helping people discover where to go, know what’s happening, and feel at home wherever they raise a shell.

Before the app

A story that started with the community.

Founder German was introduced to the kava bar community in 2012. He quickly became fascinated not only by kava, but by the remarkably different communities forming around it. Every bar had its own personality—some quiet and restorative, others filled with music, games, conversation, and late-night energy.

In 2015, when there were fewer than 150 known kava bars nationwide, he launched BestKavaBar.com to help people find, understand, and review them. He traveled across the country visiting bars, meeting their owners, managers, kavatenders, and regulars, and learning the customs that made each place distinct.

By 2024, German had visited more than 500 kava bars. Along the way, he watched a close-knit movement become a nationwide community—and saw how much harder it was becoming for that community to stay connected.

The problem worth solving

The community grew. The information scattered.

One or two bars in a city became five, ten, twenty, and sometimes more than 50 within driving distance. Friend groups spread across different locations. Regulars became kava hoppers. Travelers tried to plan routes using a patchwork of maps, outdated websites, and social posts that disappeared before everyone saw them.

German had imagined a kava bar app for years. By 2025, it was clear the community had grown large enough to need one.

Who’s working?Where is everyone tonight?Quiet and work-friendly—or packed and loud?When is happy hour?What’s happening today?What should I expect at a new bar?

The journey

More than a decade, one connected purpose.

HappyKava began as a simple discovery app and grew through feedback from regulars, travelers, owners, managers, and kavatenders.

BestKavaBar was also rebuilt and connected with HappyKava, bringing years of discovery and review experience into the same ecosystem.

Every addition follows the same principle: make it easier for people to participate in the community and easier for the independent businesses behind it to succeed.

What rooted in community means

The community is not our audience. It is our foundation.

HappyKava was built from years spent inside kava bars—not from assumptions about them. It continues to evolve through the ideas, requests, praise, and candid criticism of the people it serves.

Built from within the kava community. Shaped by the kava community. Here to grow alongside it.

Shells up. Bula!
