How to Read a Kava Bar Menu: Shells, Drinks & Prices

The most useful information on a kava menu is the ingredient description, preparation, serving size, and price. A colorful drink name or a category heading cannot answer all four questions.

Start with the ingredients#

Many kava venues publish menus that also contain coffee, food, tea, or other botanical drinks. Find the actual kava section and read the item description. Ask staff to identify any unfamiliar ingredient or proprietary blend before ordering. Do not treat “botanical,” “elixir,” or “tea” as interchangeable with kava.

HappyKava's bar profiles show structured menus when a venue publishes them. Some bars have only an image, an external menu link, or incomplete menu information. A missing item on HappyKava does not prove that the bar does not serve it.

Shells and serving sizes#

“Shell” is a menu term you may encounter for a serving of kava. Treat the listed size as venue-specific. If the menu offers single, double, small, or large options, check what each label means at that bar. A larger liquid volume does not by itself establish a stronger or better-value drink.

For price comparisons, match the type of preparation and stated size wherever possible. If the menu does not give enough information, ask staff rather than estimating from a photo.

Prepared kava drinks#

A prepared kava drink may include additional ingredients. Read the individual item rather than assuming everything in a mixed menu category has the same base. Ask about sweeteners, dairy or plant milk, caffeine, and other ingredients relevant to your preferences.

A drink's description can help you decide whether it fits your taste. It cannot establish that the product is appropriate for a particular medical condition. The NCCIH kava resource provides general health and safety context.

Flights and bulk purchases#

A flight groups multiple samples or servings into one purchase. Confirm the number of items and the size of each. Compare flights with other flights, not with one shell.

Growlers, gallons, pitchers, and refills are bulk purchases. Check whether the price includes the container or only a refill. A growler price appearing beside a single-serving price can make a summary look more expensive even though the purchases are not equivalent.

Read the full price#

The smallest printed number may be an optional add-on, a small size, or a refill. Before comparing two venues, check:

1. The base item and selected serving size.
2. Whether an extra ingredient or container costs more.
3. Whether a displayed discount has eligibility requirements.
4. Whether the listing says anything about taxes or other charges.

If details are missing, confirm with the venue. Do not assume an all-in total from a menu snapshot.

What the HappyKava price index measures#

The Kava Price Index summarizes eligible kava item/size prices from a bounded sample of public menus. It separates shells, flights, and bulk purchases where the labels support that classification. Food, non-kava drinks, add-ons, sold-out entries, and ambiguous items are excluded from the research sample.

Each priced size contributes an observation. Bars with larger published menus can contribute more observations, so the overall median is not the price of a typical bar's standard shell. It also does not compare potency or prove that a price is still available at the counter.
